Did you know that government school students in Andhra Pradesh are now receiving school kits named after India’s most respected education icon? The state government has taken a bold step for the 2025–26 academic year by launching the Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mitra (SRKVM) scheme, aiming to ensure that no child is left behind when it comes to access to quality education.
This transformative scheme covers 35.94 lakh students studying in government and aided schools across the state and provides them with fully-loaded school kits—free of cost. With a total investment of ₹953.71 crore, including ₹778.68 crore from the state government and ₹175.03 crore from the central government, SRKVM is more than just a welfare scheme—it is a step toward educational dignity, equity, and excellence.
What’s Inside the SRKVM Student Kits?
The kits are designed to support students from Class 1 to 10 with everything they need to excel in school. Each kit includes:
-
Three pairs of smart olive green uniforms paired with light yellow, green-striped shirts or gowns for uniformity and dignity.
-
A sturdy school bag, notebooks, and textbooks aligned with the curriculum.
-
Workbooks for Classes 1 to 5 to support foundational learning.
-
A belt for all younger students (Classes 1–5).
-
Shoes and two pairs of socks to promote hygiene and equality.
-
Special dictionaries for language development: a pictorial dictionary for Class 1, an English-English-Telugu Oxford dictionary for Class 6, and—for the first time ever—dictionaries in Tamil, Odia, and Urdu to support linguistic diversity.
Quality, Transparency, and Technology All in One
What sets SRKVM apart is the emphasis on quality and transparency. Unlike previous schemes that featured political branding, these kits are free of any party colors, leader images, or symbols. Instead, each kit undergoes a three-level quality check by the Quality Council of India (QCI) to ensure that only the best reaches the hands of students.
For added transparency, every mandal stock point has a ‘Quality Wall’ that publicly displays the kit components and their status. Additionally, the entire distribution is digitally monitored via the SRKVM mobile app, with biometric verification required at the time of delivery—making corruption or misuse nearly impossible.
Cost Savings and Efficient Procurement
By shifting procurement to the AP e-Procurement platform, the government has ensured a cost saving of ₹63.80 crore compared to previous administrations. This level of financial discipline reflects the state’s commitment to efficient governance and better outcomes for public spending.
All kits were scheduled to be delivered by June 20, 2025, ahead of the school reopening, ensuring that every student starts the academic year prepared and confident.
Why the Name Change? Honoring Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
Formerly known as Jagananna Vidya Kanuka, the scheme was renamed in honor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President and one of the country’s most celebrated educators. This change signifies the government’s shift away from political branding towards celebrating true icons of education and service.
Dr. Radhakrishnan, whose birthday on September 5 is celebrated as Teachers’ Day, was a philosopher, academician, and Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, and is admired nationwide for his dedication to education. By associating the scheme with his name, the state hopes to inspire students, promote educational values, and depoliticize welfare initiatives.
A Step Toward World-Class Public Education
The broader vision behind SRKVM is to raise the standards of government schools above those of private institutions, ensuring that students from all backgrounds receive the same quality of resources. This initiative also reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive growth, child welfare, and academic excellence.
By combining technology, transparency, and the legacy of a national educational hero, Swarna Andhra Pradesh’s SRKVM scheme is a shining example of how meaningful governance can reshape the future—one school bag at a time.
